What to Wear for Photos | Modesto Photographer Tips
What to Wear for Your Photo Session (Without the Stress)
Let’s be honest…
Figuring out what everyone is going to wear for photos?
It’s usually the most stressful part of the whole process.
So let me make this really simple for you.
Step One: Dress Yourself First (Yes, Mom… YOU go first)
I know what you’re thinking…
“I need to figure out the kids first.”
Nope. We’re not doing that.
You pick your outfit first.
Why?
Because you are the hardest one to dress.
And more importantly…
👉 If you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing, you won’t love your photos.
I don’t care how perfect the lighting is, how cute your kids are, or how beautiful the moment is…
If you feel uncomfortable, it will show.
So start with you.
Pick something that:
Fits your body comfortably (not something you’re hoping to “fit into”)
Makes you feel confident
Moves well (especially for sitting, holding babies, walking, etc.)
And if you’re one of my mamas—use my client closet.
That’s literally what it’s there for. Take the pressure off yourself.
Step Two: Build Everyone Else Around You
Once your outfit is picked, everything else becomes easier.
Now you’re not trying to match outfits…
You’re building a look.
Think:
Coordinating, not matching
Colors that complement each other
Textures over loud patterns
Start with your partner next, then kids.
Step Three: Stick to a Simple Color Palette
This is where people overcomplicate things.
You don’t need 10 colors.
You need 3–4 tones that flow together.
Some easy combos:
Creams + beige + soft browns
Neutrals + denim
Soft pastels + white
Earth tones (olive, rust, tan)
👉 My personal favorite?
Soft, neutral, timeless tones.
Because your photos will still look beautiful years from now.
Step Four: Avoid These Common Mistakes
This is big.
Try to avoid:
Large logos or graphics
Neon colors
Super busy patterns
Everyone wearing the exact same outfit
These things pull attention away from what actually matters…
your connection.
Step Five: Think About Movement + Comfort
Photos with me aren’t stiff and posed.
We move, we play, we snuggle.
So your outfits should:
Allow you to sit, bend, and hold your kids
Not need constant adjusting
Feel like you
Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, layers… those always photograph beautifully.
Step Six: Don’t Overthink It
I promise you…
What matters most is:
You showing up
You feeling good
You being present with your people
That’s what creates the magic.
A Little Reminder From Me
You don’t have to do this alone.
If you’re stuck, send me what you’re thinking.
Lay it out on your bed and snap a picture. I’ll help you tweak it.
That’s part of what you’re booking me for.
